Army Chaplain Joseph Verbis LaFleur (1912-1944)

Army Chaplain Joseph Verbis LaFleur (1912-1944) died aboard a sinking prisoner of war ship. He was last seen persuading his men to leave the hold of the vessel before he did, blessing them and helping them up the ladder to possible safety.

A man of great faith and compassion, he distinguished himself many times during the horrid days of the Second World War. He fearlessly aided and consoled the wounded at Clark Field during the heavy attack in December 1941. As a prisoner of the Japanese, he regularly gave his own food and clothing to Americans in the prison hospital. Once, he even posed as a laborer to go on a detail with 750 other prisoners so that they would have a chaplain with them. He often risked his own life to rescue or see to the needs of others. Many believe that his selfless devotion to his men and his love of God are marks of the heroic virtue of sanctity.

If you would like more information about this heroic chaplain, to request a prayer card, or if you feel you have received a favor through his intercession, please write to
Richard or Carol LaFleur, 187 St. Mary Ave., Opelousas, LA 70570.
